William J. Miller, of West Pittston, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Pittston, April 2, 1933, a son of the late William S. Miller and Margaret Kresge M. Fowler. He was a 1951 graduate of West Pittston High School and also attended Wilkes College. He served in the U.S. Marines Corps during the Korean Conflict. Bill was proprietor of Keystone Roofing Company, which was founded by his grandfather in 1895.
A lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, Pittston, Bill served as church moderator for more than 20 years, and as chairman of the Endowment Committee and Nominating Committee. He also served on the Board of Trustees and Board of Deacons. Always active in politics, Bill served as West Pittston auditor, treasurer, councilman and tax collector. He was chairman of council during the 1972 flood. He was a life member of the Eagles Hose Company, Pittston.
Bill along with his uncle, Larry Powell, raised and showed champion St. Bernards and Collies. In 1957, Bill and his uncle won best in breed at Westminster Dog Show with their champion St. Bernard.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Thomas Fowler; and brother-in-law Nelson Hurrey.
Survived by his wife, Dorothy Ellis Miller, with whom he would have celebrated his 53rd wedding anniversary on July 16; sons William S. Miller, Wyoming; David Miller, Harding; daughter Gail Nossavage and husband Mark, West Pittston; grandchildren Kristen and Zachary Nossavage, West Pittston; brother Douglas Miller, West Pittston; sister-in-law Teckla Hurray, West Pittston; and aunt, Grace Judge; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Home Going Services and Celebration of the Life of William J. Miller were held July 5 in the First Baptist Church, Pittston. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton.
