Greater Pittston kept its chances for a playoff spot in the Wyoming Valley American Legion Baseball League high by rebounding from what could have been a devastating loss to Back Mountain on Wednesday to beat Tunkhannock 8-7 on Thursday for a 2-1 week.
All three games were one-run margins decided in the final at bat.
GP goes to Mountain Post this morning for a huge double header. GP, Mountain Post and Tunkhannock all have three losses, the fewest outside of unbeaten Plymouth.
GP started the week at home with a 2-1 win over Nanticoke, when Kyle Borino led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run, his first of three home runs on the week. Borino finished the day 3-for-4 and scored both runs for Greater Pittston. Dave Bartuska pitched all eight innings for the win, striking out 10 while allowing just three hits.
Steve Zoranski drove in a run in the third to put Nanticoke up 1-0, a lead that stood up until David Zielenski tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
On Wednesday GP led 12-7 into the bottom of the seventh at Back Mountain, but gave up six and lost 13-12. Greg Harris hit two homers for Back Mountain. For Greater Pittston, Lemoncelli and Kobeski doubled. Kyle Borino hit his second home run of the week.
Back home on Thursday, GP was able to put the Back Mountain game behind them and beat Tunkhannock in a crucial game. The winning run came home in with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Dave Bartuska drew a bases-loaded walk. Sam Parente went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI to lead Greater Pittston and pitched a complete game. He gave up 12 hits, but he got crucial outs and was backed by 16 GP hits.
Bartuska had two RBI. Kyle Borino was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third in as many games, and two RBI. Rob Lemoncelli was 3-for-4 for GP and scored three runs. Kobeski had two hits and Sorick had three for GP. The team had 16 hits.
Dave Bartuska hit 88 mph on the radar gun for the fastest pitch at the American Legion Region 5 Showcase at Connell Park.
Bartuska was one of seven Wyoming Valley American Legion participants selected to move on to the next Showcase round on Tuesday, July 1, back at Connell Park starting at 11:00 a.m. On Monday GP is at Valley. The schedule then breaks for the 4th until July 7.
Bartuska struck out three of the seven batters he faced. His clocked speed was two miles per hour faster than Tyler Austin from Tunkhannock.
