The Pittston Area Ice Hockey team is 2 – 0 in the seventh annual Robert P. Casey Hockey Classic at the Wachovia Arena after beating the Wilkes-Barre Wolfpack and the Holy Redeemer Royals in the first two rounds.
The Patriots play the Susquehanna Valley Stampede on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a third round game which will be key in their bid to reach the semi-finals on Thursday. If they win Wednesday they will be 3-0 and the likely no. 1 seed in the Governor Division. The no. 1 and 2 seeds in the division will play Thursday, with the winner playing the winner of the Casey Division for the Classic title on Sunday.
Even with a loss or tie Wednesday the Patriots are still in good shape to reach the Governor Division game Thursday. The Patriots have 13 points with one game left. Valley West is done with round robin play. They are 2-1 with 19 points. Back Mountain is 1-1 with 9.5 points and one game left. Two of the three teams will be the division finalists.
Wyoming Area is 1-0-1 in the Casey Division and in third place with 9.5 points behind Crestwood and Paupack. They play Scranton tomorrow, Monday, and if they win have a shot at reaching the Casey Division final.
The Patriots beat Wilkes-Barre 4-1 on goals by Rich Harth, J. P. Waleski, Justin Baron and Kyle McLaughlin. Harth, Baron and McLaughlin also had assists while Patriot goal tender Patrick Barone blocked 26 shots.
The Patriots shutout the Royals 3 – 0 with goals coming from Alan Folweiler, J. P. Waleski and Rich Harth. Patriot goal tender Patrick Barone excelled in goal blocking all 20 Royal shots. Playing key tournament roles for the Patriots were Tanya Lieback, Anthony Passarella, Leah Jackett, Jonathan Sulkoski, Justin Savakinus, Conner Jones, Tyler Loftus, Kyle Jenkins, Shawn Simons, Jeremy Elston and Richard Weinstock. . The Patriots are coached by Bill Scott, Rich Benedetto, Dave Culp, Eric Culp and Genarro Passarello.
