It took a few wins to get there. And now Greater Wyoming Area’s 9-10 softball team is going on a trip. And they got the last one in style.
Greater Wyoming Area enjoyed big days from throughout its lineup in a 12-2 triumph over South Scranton in the Section 5 championship game Thursday night. With the win, GWA enters the state tournament, which begins Tuesday in Thorndale.
Ellie Glatz hit two home runs and drove in three in a 3-for-4 night. Nicole Silinskie went 1 for 2 with a home run, two walks, and drove in three runs for the winners.
Kari Melberger added two hits in support of winning pitcher Stephanie Nowak, who fanned 10.
Duryea/Pitt. Twp. 1
Kari Melberger tossed a one-hitter with five strikeouts and laced three hits to lead Greater Wyoming Area to a four-inning victory over Duryea/Pittston Township Tuesday.
Ellie Glatz and Lily Harden added three hits apiece for Greater Wyoming Area, while Evan Freeman and Olivia Kwiackowski each had one hit in the win.
Kylie Herbert recorded the lone hit for Pittston Township.
Carbino Club 0
Stephanie Nowak struck out 15 in the complete-game win and also added a hit to lead Greater Wyoming Area Monday.
Ellie Glatz hit a home run among her two hits and McKenzie Nocchi also had two hits for GWA.
Lily Harden, Kaitlyn Slusser and Kari Melberger added hits in the win. Erin McVee fanned nine for Carbino Club.

Kylie Herbert posted 14 strikeouts in a no-hit effort and added a hit to the offense to propel Duryea/Pittston Twp. Monday.
Hannah Waldski had two hits, including a home run, for Duryea/Pittston Township. Madisyn Antal, Tiara George and Emma Conte each added singles in the victory.
Alexa Bonk scored South Scranton’s run.
