Editor’s note: It’s no secret that the Sunday Dispatch carries a lot of history dating back to 1947. Now, we’re providing our readers with some of that history. Every week, we’ll hop in our Delorean and go back in time to each decade since the Dispatch has been in print to give you a look into the past.

July 2003

Greater Pittston repeated as Wyoming Valley American Legion champions for the first time since 1976-77. But it wasn’t traditional. With rainy conditions for several weeks, Greater Pittston was awarded the No. 1 seed over Tunkhannock.

Normal conditions would have pitted Tunkhannock and GP, with Tunkhannock having to beat GP twice. And since both teams had players in the annual Legion All-Star game, they didn’t want to play Monday – the day before the regional tournament started.

The teams agreed not to play and just head to the regional tournament with Greater Pittston the No. 1 seed.

July 1993

Brothers Ray and Joe Cichocki, professional bass fishermen from Dupont, each placed in the top 10 in a recent Red Man tournament at Lake Champlain in New York Joe placed seventh and Ray fourth in the field of 180 fishermen.

Joe reeled his limit of five bass totaling 11 pounds, 12 ounces. Ray caught his limit as well, in at 13 pounds, 10 ounces, which was one ounce behind third place. Ray Cichocki was sponsored by Ray’s Bait and Tackle, Rebel, Hart, Basswater Products, Slider Worms, Sparkle Scales, Hobbie, Zebco, Motorguide and Delta Tires. Joe Cichocki was sponsored by Ray’s Bait and Tackle, Advantage Lines and Bite Back Lures.

July 1983

The Rosebuds won their second straight Hughestown Girls League softball title. Members of the team were Christine Sobuta, Maura McNulty, Danielle Battisti, Tina Grieco, Nickie Bratlee, Kelly Murphy, Jennifer Stiffen, Lisa Boos, Terri Pahl, Dorothy Roche, Kim Toole and Missy Alu.

The coach was Tess Endres.

July 1973

The Duryea Teeners captured the 1973 Greater Pittston Teeners League championship with a 2-1 win over Old Forge. Duryea wasted no time with Duryea’s Yesnowski’s single and Bachkosky was safe on a fielder’s choice. With two out, Pete Olsheski smashed a triple down the left field line to score Bachkosky to make it 1-0.

Yesnowski got the win on the mound and didn’t allow his run until the Old Forge final inning. He finished allowing eight hits and struck out seven.

July 1963

Pittston City picked up four wins in the week to claim the District 15 Little League baseball championship.

The locals downed Kingston, 5-1, before an estimated 2,000 fans at the local stadium. It was the first time in eight years that the title came out of Pittston.

Louis Tribbett and southpaw Charlie Turco lead Pittston City to the four wins on the mound.

Tribett pitched four-hit ball against Kingston and aided his own cause with a double that led to two runs. He fanned nine batters, including the last three after the visitors left the bases loaded.

July , 1953

Pittston Little Leaguers won two playoff games to set up a showdown with Moosic that started a four-game run for the locals. If Pittston won all four games, they would be heading to Williamsport for the Little League World Series. Eugene Thomas picked up the win for Pittston at the game played in South Scranton.
