Coughlin defeated Pittston Area 6-1 in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 opener for both teams on Thursday in Plains.

The Crusaders Coughlin scored a run in each of the final three innings, after an early 3-0 lead. The Crudsaders Marissa Ross hit a solo homer in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Patriots Pittston Area loaded the bses in the seventh on singles by Taylor Baloga, Lauren Dragon and Kaitlyn Simyan hit consecutive one-out singles to load the bases, but only got one run out of it.

The Patriots, who started five freshmen, made four errors.

Freshman pitcher Taylor Baloga gave up four earned runs walked three and struck out six in her varsity debut.

This season looked like last season in the Lady Warriors opener at Tunkhannock on Thursday. As they did repeatedly last season, they rallied late to pull out a 1-run game.

Behind 4-2, the LWS scored three in the top of the sixth. Adrienne Przybyla led Wyoming Area’s 13-hit attack with three singles. Alex Holtz, Kaitlyn Kross and Nicole Turner added two hits each.

Winning picther Alex Holtz gave up two earned runs, walked six and struck out four.

Nanticoke scored five in the first inning in a 5-inning win over the Lady Patriots on Friday in Nanticoke.
