Editor’s note: Each week, the Sunday Dispatch traverses the archives to find the most interesting sports stories of this week. Here are a few of them.
The Pittston Area field hockey team, in its fourth season as a program, won its first game with a 5-1 win over Berwick. Nadie Vassell scored a pair of goals, along with a single tally from Kristen Baumes.
Katie Connors and Kim Daley also scored in the win.
The team was coached by Danielle Aiello, who called a timeout with 1:27 remaining, begging her players to not douse her with a Gatorade shower.
Wyoming Area returned from Cripsin Field with a hard-fought, 20-7 loss to powerhouse Berwick.
Tim Herron had a hand in 18 tackles, while Tom Loftus made 14. But the dream of beating the Bulldogs was denied in the second half. Herron scored the Warriors’ only touchdown, a 30-yard option that featured several cuts and sprints to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter.
Berwick scored just moments later. It also added another touchdown in the final moments.
Pittston Area was held to just 113 total yards and suffered its first loss of ‘83 in a stunning 21-0 decision to Hanover. Hanover held the ball for a 354-yard performance.
Pittston Area’s offense managed just five first downs. PA defensive ends Dave Capitano and Joe Sekulsky each had a sack apiece.
Pittston Area got 207 yards on the ground from Jimmy Cefalo and another 104 through the air from Jimmy Castellino to record the Patriots’ fourth straight win, 28-14, over Wyoming Valley West.
Dave Bachkosky scored PA’s first touchdown. But on the following possession, Castellino hit Bernie Dessoye for a 63-yard score.
St. John’s gridiron squad battled favored Newport to a scoreless tie. It was the first meeting of the two schools since 1941.
St. John’s had many replacements on the team, including halfback Jimmy Doran and guard Pat Dougherty. Doran and quarterback Pat Pizano did most of the work for the locals.
