Editor’s note: It’s no secret that the Sunday Dispatch carries a lot of history dating back to 1947. Now, we’re providing our readers with some of that history. Every week, we’ll hop in our Delorean and go back in time to each decade since the Dispatch has been in print to give you a look into the past.
July 20, 2003
The Avoca/Dupont All-Stars won two games this week in the Wilkes-Barre Rec Tourney for a 5-2 postseason mark. It defeated Back Mountain American, 4-3. Chris Kivak pitched five strong innings, scattering five singles. Extra base hits by Thomas Kivak, Nick Szumski and John Waleski made the difference in the game. Earlier in the week, Avoca/Dupont beat Pittston, 10-4. Mike Hannon struck out 11 in the first round win.
July 18, 1993
Bob Gill shot a near record 54-hole score of 212 to capture the Fox Hill Championship. Gill’s one-under par total was the second best in club championship history. Gill ran away from the field as he finished 14 strokes better than the runner-up, Bill Lawler. Rollie Schmidt, Sandy Lafoca and Mike Carroll all finished with 228. Tom Gill Jr. won the first flight with a 161. Bill Gill and Andy Traglis followed him.
July 17, 1983
A four-win week put the Greater Pittston American Legion ball club a playoff berth. With a 6-3 win over Plains, the team’s 15th victory, it captured the division title. The three runs surrendered to Plains were the first Greater Pittston gave up in 33 innings. Ken Hoats garnered the win. He also added a 3-for-3 performance, while Bob Musto had a pair of hits. Mark Ambrose and Chris Barrett cracked doubles to aid the 10-hit onslaught.
July 22, 1973
In the annual North-South All-Star game, the North defeated the South, 3-1, with Duryea’s John Yesnowski picking up the win. Dave Bachkosky, also of Duryea, drove in two of the North’s runs and tallied the third himself.
July 21, 1963
Rose Marie bettered its chances of copping the Greater Pittston Softball League title by knocking off second-place W&M Railing, 3-0, in this week’s top contest. Rose Marie also defeated Gar Let, 10-2, to make a clean sweep. Brogna, with two singles, and Oop DiBuono were the hitters for Rose Marie. Vince Kaporch, Charlie Salco and Gene O’Brien got W&M’s only hits.
July 19, 1953
A protest meeting involving West Pittston and Jenkins Township was held following a Sunburban League game on July 5. West Pittston won the game but Jenkins Township protested on the grounds that West Pittston used an ineligible player, Dave Rinks, as a pitcher under the name Jack Coleman. Inasmuch as West Pittston did not attend the meeting and the umpires identified the West Pittston hurler for the game as Dave Rinks, who was on leave from the armed forces and not under contract by West Pittston, the game was awarded to Jenkins Township.
