Pittston Area graduate and Temple University standout Brandon Matthews finished in a tie for second at the 100th Pennsylvania Amateur Championship last week at Saucon Valley’s Old Course.

Matthews fired a three-round score of 215 to finish two shots behind champion Christopher Ault of Yardley Country Club.

The former U.S. Open hopeful book-ended the tournament with a pair of 72s. In the second round, Matthews fired a 71.

Later this month, Matthews will once again be on the championship trail at the U.S. Amateur Championship. The tournament will be held from Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. The tournament is match play.

Red Mill moves into first

Red Mill moved into first place of the Emanon Country Club league by defeating Bryan Construction, 2-1. John Zelonis and Guy Fasciana led the winners with 36, while Mike Fiscus Sr. led Bryans with a 40.

Powers knocked O’Connor Plumbing out of the lead with a 2-1 victory. Tony Pisano and Jim McCann both had 40 for the winners. Sean Kerrigan led O’Connors with a 40.

Ashley Machine and Old State Roaders battled to a 1.5-1.5 tie with Zack Mulhern (3)7 and Paul Masley (40) leading Ashley’s. Bill Tighe and Joe Hughes lead State Road with 37s.

Selenskis Insurance keep playoff hopes alive with a 1.5-1.5 tie with Cookies Travelers. Rick Laneski and Rob Romo led Selenskis with 34 and 37, respectively, while Mike Fiscus Jr. had 35 for Cookies.

Aug. 8 will be a position night for the league.
