Editor’s note: It’s no secret that the Sunday Dispatch carries a lot of history dating back to 1947. Now, we’re providing our readers with some of that history. Every week, we’ll hop in our Delorean and go back in time to each decade since the Dispatch has been in print to give you a look into the past.

JULY 6, 2003

In District 16 Little League play, Pittston Twp. and Avoca/Dupont remained unbeaten through the all-star tournament.

Avoca/Dupont beat South Wilkes-Barre in an extra inning thriller, 11-10, on a bases-loaded single by Andrew Jackowitz in the bottom of the seventh. Pittston Twp. also won a tight game, beating Hanover, 4-3.

Nick Morreale had a key double for Pittston and Sam Parente hit a home run and was the winning pitcher. Both wins pitted the two teams against each other later in the tournament.

JULY 4, 1993

The Pittston Stoners Soccer League brought Britain’s coaching elite to Greater Pittston for a five-day soccer camp at the Martin L. Mattei Field.

Thirty-five children, ages 5 to13, participated in the fourth annual event and were introduced skills and techniques by two of Britannia’s certified instructors, Diccon Loy and David Widger.

JULY 3, 1983

Ron Musto, a Pittston Area product, shared a first-place tie in the opening event of the Anthracite Golf Association Junior Tour held at Scranton Country Club.

Musto’s five-over par 77 earned him half of the victory spoils with Jeff Haversatat in the 13-15 age bracket of the boys division.

JULY 8, 1973

The Don Allan Pro-Am Golf Tournament was held at Fox Hill Country Club with a total of 41 pro golfers from throughout the state.

Dick Hendrickson, a member of the PGA Tour, copped championship honors with a low individual score of 68. He also won the Pro-Am event with teammate Leo Feldman and was a member of the winning Pro-Am-Member team with Feldman and Rollie Schmidt.

JULY 7, 1963

Jenkins Township copped a thrilling 9-8 win over Mountain Top in Twilight Baseball. The win was the fourth in five games for the locals.

Jenkins had a good day at the plate with Jay Rowan collecting three hits and John Adonizio, Johnny Wojcik and Jimmy Kobi getting two each. Wojcik got the win in relief.

JULY 5, 1953

Lack of players and attendance caused a temporary shutdown of the Avoca Little League this week, but play resumed shortly after. Reasons for the curtailment of Little League activity were a general lack of attendance on the part of fans, but more important, too many players were absent. Most of those players were away attending summer camps.

The teams that participated in the Avoca Little League were Bucky’s Service Station, Roberts’ Service Station, Coffee’s Hardware and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
