Pittston Area’s Allie Barber scored just 20 seconds in on a feed from Sara Ruby and the Patriots picked up a 7-4 win over Lake-Lehman in the season opener Friday afternoon in girls soccer.

Ruby chipped in with three scores of her own and added an assist in the Patriots’ win. Barber also finished with a hat trick and a pair of assists.

Each team had 14 shots, meaning Pittston Area converted on 50 percent of its attempts. Mindina Lieback had eight saves for the Patriots in goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hanover Area 2,

Wyoming Area 1

After a scoreless first half, Hanover Area scored the next two goals to open up the scoring against Wyoming Area in the season opener Friday afternoon in girls soccer.

Allee Petit scored for Wyoming Area in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. The Warriors had 10 shots to Hanover’s eight.

Caitlin Butchko had five saves for the Warriors.

BOYS SOCCER

Lake-Lehman 6,

Pittston Area 0

Henry Knuk recorded two scores and had an assist as Lake-Lehman defeated Pittston Area 6-0 in the team’s opener on Friday’s night.

Austin Harry had three scores and one assist for the Black Knights. Taylor Roberts made seven saves for the Patriots, who had only four shots on goal.

Wyoming Area 1,

Hanover Area 1

Jared Zaboski scored one goal for the Warriors, while Dylan Luzny scored the lone goal for the Hawkeye’s for the team’s season opener Friday night.

Wyoming Area outshot Hanover Area 27-12. Aaron Carter had five saves for the Warriors.

Holy Redeemer 2,

Wyoming Area 1

Wyoming Area’s Victoria Braccini put the Warriors in front early, but it wasn’t enough as the Royals scored onece in the second half and added another in overtime for the season opening win Friday.

Braccini’s goal came 14 minutes in on a feed from Emilie Wnko. Christina Granteed made five saves for Wyoming Area, who had only nine shots.

GOLF

Tryba Tournament

Pittston Area’s Tyler McGarry shot an 81, good for 14th place at the annual Wyoming Valley Conference Tryba Preaseason Tournament held at Fox Hill Country Club Monday.

Although Pittston Area took the low spot with McGarry’s solid round, Wyoming Area finished two strokes ahead of the Patriots in sixth place. The Warriors shot a team score of 341, while Pittston Area had a 343.

A pair of girls led the way for Wyoming Area. The top spot for the Warriors came with Madeline Wharton’s 82. Courtney Melvin was a stroke behind while Colin Herron came home with an 86.

Gavin Kross’ 90 finished out the scoring for Wyoming Area.

Following McGarry was Pittston Area’s Braulio Garcia and Tyler Mooney who each carded an 87. David Zydko was the final Pittston Area scorer with an 88.

Holy Redeemer’s Mariano Medico repeated as champion of the tournament after overcoming a triple bogey on the par-3 hole No. 7 to shoot an even-par 71. He outdueled teammate Andrew Crossin who came in with a 73. Holy Redeemer went on to win the event with a blistering 298 team score.

Dallas 159,

Pittston Area 169

Ryan Georgetti earned medalist honors with a score of 34 to lead Dallas to the win over Pittston Area Wednesday at Fox Hill.

Chad DiBona scored a 40 while Brendon Baloh scored a 41 and John Wilson a 44.

Pittston Area’s Tyler McGarry led the effort with a 40 while David Zydko and Braulio Garcia each scored a 42 and Tyler Mullen a 45.

Wyoming Area 186,

Wyoming Sem 190

Courtney Melin and Madeline Wharton each scored a 45 to lead Wyoming Area to the win Wednesday at Fox Hill.

Gavin Gross and Tony Faitta each scored a 48 for the Warriors.

Jon Zirnheld and Marc Lafond led Wyoming Seminary with a 45 by each while Andrew Golden scored a 49 and Jarod Godlewski scored a 51.

GIRLS TENNIS

Wyoming Area 3,

MMI Prep 2

Kierstin Grillo won in singles, while the teams of Julia Banas/Lauren Petty and Maddie Ambruso/Sam Williams took wins in doubles to give the Warriors a win Friday afternoon.

Grillo took care of Clair Sheen by a count of 6-0, 6-2. Each doubles team on fairly easitly. However, Banas and Perry won a second set tie break to claim their win.

Holy Redeemer 5,

Wyoming Area 0

Wyoming Area failed to win a set Tuesday when they faced Holy Redeemer.

The Warriors’ doubles team of Maddie Ambruso and Sam Williams went to a 10-point tie break against Annie Cosgrove and Libby Pinto in their first set. They eventually lost 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

Wyoming Sem 4,

Wyoming Area 1

Nathalie Joanlanne, Madison Nardone and Jaqui Meuser all won without dropping a game in singles action to help Wyoming Seminary earn a victory over Wyoming Area on Wednesday.

Megan Obeid and Chloe Xin earned a win in doubles for the Blue Knights. The team of Maddie Ambruse and Sam Williards won for Wyoming Area.

Pittston Area 3,

Berwick 2

Pittston Area’s Claudia Schandra took the lone singles win for the Patriots, but it was enough as both doubles teams won to take down Berwick Monday.

The team of Tatiana Supinski and Kari Scull cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win. Kristen Capitano and Sara O’Hop also won easily, 6-4, 6-2.

Kaya Swanek had 12 service points as Holy Redeemer beat Pittston Area 25-7, 25-7, 25-9.
