For the first time in 12-years, the annual Patriot Cup soccer tournament, staged Saturday, has branched out to include girls teams, primarily due to girls PIAA soccer being played in the fall as well as the boys.
According to Pittston Area soccer booster club president, Michelle Mikitish, in addition to the eight boys teams entered, six female teams are participating including Pittston Area’s female booster club, Fury. Wyoming Area girl’s team was invited but chose not to participate this year.
“This event benefits the boys, the girls and the junior high soccer programs,” said Mikitish. “This fundraiser is pretty much 75% of the money we raise for the program.”
Mikitish added, “It’s a fun day, we’ve been doing it a long time and we have great food, t-shirts, great weather usually and it’s just great for the kids.”
Trophies were handed out at the end of the day, which concluded well into the afternoon.
