Duryea denied LSA Grants for street improvements

DURYEA — The borough council announced Tuesday night’s meeting that it was denied a street improvement LSA Grant.

President Jimmy Balchune said there was stiff competition for the grants this year, but he is optimistic that the borough will be rewarded in the future.

“There’s only so much money that can go around,” said Balchune. “But, hopefully next year we’ll get it.”

Balchune said there was $65 million worth of requests for the LSA Grant, but only $12 million could be distributed evenly.

In other business, the council:

• Accepted the resignations of Trina Moss, Mary Ann Cappelloni and Leigh Ann Balchune from the Duryea Recreation Board.

• Accepted the recommendations of Recreation Board members to appoint Stephanie Shupp, Ken Werner and Anissa Akulonis to the board.

• Accepted the recommendation of Recreation Board members to appoint Marla Demich as an alternate board member. The council is still seeking to appoint one more alternate member.

• Approved the handicap ordinance 2015-2 with the amendment to correct parking violation fees according to PennDot regulations.

The borough council will meet next at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the borough building.
