DURYEA — The borough council announced at its July 14 meeting that it has been denied a street improvement Local Share Account (LSA) grant .

According to council president Jimmy Balchune, there was stiff competition for the grants this year, but he is optimistic the borough will be rewarded in the future.

“There’s only so much money that can go around,” said Balchune. “But, hopefully, next year, we’ll get it.”

Balchune said there were $65 million worth of requests for the LSA grant, but only $12 million could be distributed evenly.

In other business, the council:

• Accepted the resignations of Trina Moss, Mary Ann Cappelloni and Leigh Ann Balchune from the Duryea Recreation Board.

• Accepted the recommendations of recreation board members to appoint Stephanie Shupp, Ken Werner and Anissa Akulonis to the board.

• Accepted the recommendation of recreation board members to appoint Marla Demich as an alternate board member. The council is still seeking to appoint one more alternate member.

• Approved handicap ordinance 2015-2 with an amendment to correct parking violation fees according to PennDOT regulations.

The next council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the borough building, 315 Main St.
