DURYEA — The Germania Hose Co. celebrated summer despite the low temperatures during its first-ever Picnic in the Snow event Saturday, Jan. 16.
More than 120 visitors stopped at the Germania Hose Co. building on Foote Avenue to enjoy summertime favorites like potato pancakes, pierogies, halushki, hamburgers and hot dogs during the event.
Jerry Korea, president of the hose company, said locals were eager to taste the company’s homemade potato pancakes during the winter months. Typically the only time the savory pancakes are available is during the hose company’s annual picnic in July.
“We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about why we don’t have potato pancakes during wintertime, when people are craving them,” he said.
Korea added the event was a successful fundraiser for the hose company and it will be held again next winter. He said ever since the organization had to close its doors to bingo last year, members have been looking for more unique ways to help offset the fire department’s costs.
“Our forefathers taught us to not just ask for money, but to give back when we (raise money),” said Korea. “We’re always thinking and coming up with different ways to get the money we desperately need while also providing back to the community.”
The next fundraiser to be held at Germania Hose Co. will be the fire company’s annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Feb. 21.
