The church will sponsor a Chicken BBQ and Basket Raffle from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 in the parking lot of Arcaro and Genell Restaurant located on Main Street. The dinner is take out with some limited outside seating and will be prepared by Arcaro and Genell. Tickets are $10 and will purchase 1/2 a barbecue chicken, pasta salad, corn on the cob, a roll and dessert. Queen of the Apostles parishioners will make a pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, with the Oblates of St. Joseph Laity Association on Monday, Aug. 22 to celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy and the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. The bus leaves at 7 a.m. from the Oblates of St. Joseph, 1880 Highway 315, Pittston, and departs at 5 p.m. from the shrine. The parish office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon from Monday, Aug. 1 to Wednesday, Aug. 3 and will be closed Thursday, Aug. 4 and Friday, Aug. 5.

The annual parish picnic will take place from Thursday, Aug. 4 to Saturday, Aug. 6 on the parish grounds. Non-perishable food items and paper products to be used in the food basket stand are being collected. Food preparation will begin at 8 a.m. and clean up starts at 3 p.m. Stands will be taken down beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7

Volunteer opportunities are available for students in grades five and up for the annual parish picnic. Credit hours will be given if needed. The sign up sheet is located at the back of the church or on the rectory’s back porch.

Volunteers are needed as kitchen help for the nights of the picnic. Duties include heating food in the kitchen that will go up to the picnic grounds and cleaning pots and pans as they return. Call the rectory to sign up.

Waiters and waitresses are needed for the evenings of the picnic. Hours are 5:45 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4 and Friday, Aug. 5 and from 4:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

A week-long Vacation Bible School will be held for children from the parishes of Avoca, Dupont and Duryea. Children in grades 4-6 can attend the program to be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon from Monday, Aug. 8 through Friday, Aug. 12 at the Nativity of Our Lord Parish picnic grounds. For more information, call David Tigue, at 570-457-3502. Registration forms are located in our church lobby and must be returned to the parish office by Monday, Aug. 1. There is no registration fee but donations are accepted.

All current altar servers, lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers are required to attend a training session. Altar servers are to attend a training session after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Aug. 13, or at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21. Lectors and EMS are to attend a training session at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14 or after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, Aug. 20. All training sessions will last approximately 45 minutes. The sessions will provide the new liturgical guidelines. You will also complete a new contact information/preference sheet. All “new recruits” must attend one of these training sessions.

Father Petro will be officially installed as the new pastor during the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Aug. 14.

Sunday School for Summer Break: Fellowship begins at 10 a.m. and service starts at 11 a.m.

Family Outdoor Movie Night will be Saturday, Aug. 6. Cars can begin parking around 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 8:30 p.m. Rain date will be Saturday, Aug. 20.

St. John’s is renting out the lower level for non-members for events. Cost is $25 per hour plus a $25 per hour security fee. Cost for members of St John’s is $12.50 per hour and a $12.50 security deposit, maximum four-hour limit.

The Greater Pittston Kids Clothes Closet is open on Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

The Care and Concern Free Health Clinic is open every Wednesday and is free of charge. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. in the former Seton Catholic High School and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Patients for The Pediatric Health Clinic are now being seen on the first Thursday and third Thursday of the month at Dr. Imbrogno’s office at 570-855-6035 until further notice. Children’s immunization records are required upon registration. Parents or guardians must be present to have their child examined. All services are free and confidential.

The food pantry always in need of the following items: cereal, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit, soups, vegetables, canned hams and other non-perishable items. Call 570-654-9923 for more information.

The annual bazaar will be held from Thursday, Aug. 4 to Saturday, Aug. 6 on the church grounds. Hours of operation are from 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5 and from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 6. Food includes halushki, potato pancakes, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheesesteaks, porketta, pulled pork, apple pie, fried dough and funnel cake. There will be live entertainment each night, children’s games and a holiday booth that includes decorations for different holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day and others.
