PITTSTON — The Greater Pittston Food Pantry of the St. John the Evangelist Parish Care and Concern Ministries recently celebrated its eighth anniversary serving local, low-income families.

The food pantry has grown from serving 25 families per week to the present 80 households per week and over 800 families have registered over the past year.

Due to the generous support of the community, the pantry’s services have been enhanced by the donation of a van, computers, stainless steel shelving, a two-door refrigerator and a walk-in freezer.

As a member of “Feeding America,” a national network, the pantry received the majority of its food from the Weinberg Regional Food Bank along with community support to help families at “food risk.” Nutrition Education is provided by Commission on Economic Opportunity nutritionists. Coordinators Peggy Burke and Carl Boos receive regular ServeSafe Food Handling Training through the Weinberg Food Bank.
