PITTSTON — Students in the Pittston Area Middle School have recently been seeing posters asking if they are #patriotsmart.

#patriotsmart is the new campaign being implemented at the Pittston Area Middle School that teaches and encourages students to make good decisions when using their cell phones, social media, and the Internet. The project is sponsored by the Student Assistance Program (SAP Team) and the Student Council.

Sarah Donahue, a seventh grade reading teacher at the middle school, is a member of Leadership Wilkes-Barre’s Impact program class of 2016. As part of the Leadership program, participating teachers need to define a need in their school, and implement a School Impact Project, addressing that need.

The posters around the school highlight the most common dangers associated with using technology. They ask, “Are you #patriotsmart?” and they provide tips to be safe online.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, all middle school students will hear a presentation from Luzerne County Detective Charles Balogh, teaching them about how to be safe when using technology. Detective Balogh is responsible for investigating cyber crimes within Luzerne County. He is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and PA State Police Northeast Computer Crime Unit.

At 6 p.m. that same evening, Pittston Area School District parents are invited to hear a presentation by Balogh. The seminar is free, and will be held in the middle school cafeteria. Registration is not required, and parents are urged to attend.

Impact: A Leadership in Education Program, brings together the region’s education professionals for a series of interactive sessions designed to empower teachers to be progressive agents of positive change within schools. Leadership Wilkes-Barre is a community leadership development organization dedicated to fostering civic engagement of emerging leaders and integrating them in the Greater Wilkes-Barre community structure by providing the information, skills and training needed to become leaders and active participants in the community.
