Children’s activities held Mondays

PITTSTON — Children ages 18 months to age 5 are welcome to bring their grownup to the Pittston Memorial Library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings. Registration is required by calling the library. This session concludes Monday, Feb. 15.

Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristin features age appropriate stories, songs, activities and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children. Programs are as follows: Books and Babies, for ages newborn to 18 months, 9:30 a.m.; Terrific Twos, for ages 18 months to 3 years, 10:30 a.m.; and Preschool Pals, ages 3 to 5 years, at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required and sign-ups are available in the children’s wing or by calling the children’s department. This session concludes Tuesday, Feb. 16.

The next Science Club meeting for children ages seven and up will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18.

The Fangirls Fanclub will play Harry Potter Scene It at the library at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18.

The book club will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22 to discuss Jess Walter’s “Beautiful Ruins.”

Pre-Oscar Party will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, Tuesday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, Feb. 25. The evenings will feature screenings of the nominees’ movies just in time for the big night. Monday will be “Inside Out,” Tuesday will be “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Thursday will be “Bridge of Spies.” All movies will be shown in the in the community room. The library will host a painting event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Paint N’ Pinot, 113 S. Main St. The cost for this fundraiser is $35 and the painting will be a vase full of shamrocks to get in the St. Patrick’s Day mood. Children ages one to 11 are invited to a Wee Build Open House at anytime on Thursday, Feb. 25 and Friday, Feb. 26. These toys allow for a variety of opportunities for children to express themselves through play which promotes development in many skill areas such as social-emotional, physical development, mathematics, science, language arts, and art.

Kids age 18 months to 11 years are invited to read for fun this February and help to build the tallest Lego tower. Participants are to report each week in February for prizes and chances to win the grand prize of a Lego Builder Kit. Weekly activities include I-Spy, crafts and science. Local children’s author, Paula Chaiken of Shavertown and local illustrator, Kristen Leonard of Scranton will be at the Pittston library to talk about their recently released book, “I Know Grandpa” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. Copies of the book will be available for $10. Call the library to register for this free event held in the Cosgrove Annex.

The library will be offering a Ukrainian pysanky class taught by Tammy Budnovitch from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 21. This class for adults teaches the basic steps of making a pysanky. The cost for the class is $20 per person which includes supplies needed. Space is limited and reservations will be made on a first come first serve basis. To reserve a spot, stop by the library with full payment by Wednesday, March 16. Tammy will also have pysanky, as well as additional supplies, for sale at this event. The library will have a temporary change of hours until further notice:

Monday and Thursday – Noon to 7 p.m.

Wednesday – Closed

Tuesday, Friday and Saturday – 9 to 4 p.m.

Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.

Adult computer classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. The class goes over email, mouse skills and web surfing. Registration is required by calling the library.

The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.

Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.

Children ages 3 to 11 are invited to the Lego Club from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Pittston Memorial Library.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.

WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY

Intro to social media Feb. 18

WEST PITTSTON — A basic introduction program for the latest social media will be offered for free to older adults at the West Pittston Library. The topic will be Pinterest at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Call the library to register.

A program teaching how to make a rope-like scarf with the basic chain and double-crochet stitch will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Some basic crochet knowledge or experience is recommended. Participants will need one skein of medium weight yarn and a medium sized crochet hook (G/6/4 mm or H/8/5 mm). Call the library to register for free.

Read Across America will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m. celebrating the work of Dr. Seuss with an afternoon of theme-related activities. All ages are welcome to this free event. Call the library to register.

The Library Laboratory is back every Tuesday at 6 p.m. to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment. Class size is limited.

Antiheroes in Literature Book Discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. The group includes an informal discussion and refreshments while examining popular fiction’s more unconventional characters. Call the library to register for this free program.

The West Pittston Library Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.

Kindergarten Readiness Program will be held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Register by Wednesday of each week.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

Reading program is Feb. 20

WYOMING — The Furry Tails reading program will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Wyoming Free Library. Call the library to register.

Preschool story time for children between ages 3-5 will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Feb. 22 through March 21. There will be no story time on Feb. 15.

There will be a fill-a-bag book sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. The cost per bag is $5.

The LEGO Club will meet on following Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon on Feb. 27 and March 12. This program is free and suitable for children of all ages. Registration is required.

The library will begin the third year of its “Tea Tips and Treasures” themed tea parties on the third Saturday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. There will be tea and a snack, an interactive display and a short workshop. Children can dress up and bring a doll or stuffed animal to match each theme. Ages 3 and up may attend. There is no cost for the program and an adult must stay with the child. Sign up one week ahead. The library is holding classes on how to turn old t-shirts into memory quilts and wall hangings. The classes will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. from Friday, March 4 until Friday, March 18 and from Friday, April 1 until Friday, April 15. The classes are limited to eight and registration is required. There will be an initial $5 registration fee to cover printing costs and any extra materials. The money will be collected at the first class. The library has a limited number of machines, so participants are encouraged to bring their own machine. Participants should have sewing experience. The library will hold a discussion group during the final season of “Downtown Abbey.” The group meets from 5 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and a special finale tea will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. Reserve a spot by Wednesday, March 9.

The library is hosting a children’s Virtual Minecraft Art Show. Contest participants will design up to three original art pieces using Minecraft and e-mail them to the library. All submitted pieces will be displayed on the library Facebook and webpage during National Library Week Sunday, April 10 to Saturday, April 16.
