Showers are expected to dampen the Wyoming Valley as the weekend approaches.

Temperatures are also expected to drop, which could produce some light snowfall for the area.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, a cold front will move through the region on Friday, which will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Some of those storms may contain gusty winds.

On Saturday night and into Sunday, a powerful arctic front will produce strong winds and potentially some light snow accumulation.

No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne or Lackawanna counties.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated that it was 49 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, with fair skies reported.

Partly sunny skies are expected today, with a high near 67.

Clouds will move into the region tonight, and showers will become likely along with a potential for thunderstorms into early Friday morning. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected, and the low will be around 59.

Showers and a possible thunderstorm are expected for Friday before 2 p.m., followed by a chance of showers and thunderstorms into the afternoon hours. Up to a half an inch of rain is possible, and the high will be near 70.

Mostly cloudy skies will carry over into Friday night, along with a 30 percent chance of showers before 7 p.m. The low will be around 45.

Partly sunny skies are predicted for Saturday, along with a 30 percent chance of showers. The high will be near 55.

Mostly cloudy skies will carry over into Saturday night, along with a 50 percent chance of rain showers before 2 a.m. followed by a chance of snow showers into the overnight hours. The low will drop to around 27.

Partly sunny skies will round out the weekend on Sunday, along with a 40 percent chance of snow showers before 8 a.m. The high will be near 36.

Partly cloudy skies are predicted for Sunday night, with a low around 25.
