The Wyoming Valley could see some rain before the weekend, along with a slight possibility of some severe weather.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area today. There is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms with damaging winds later in the morning through mid-afternoon.

The combination of head and humidity could also push the heat index into the 90s.

No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne County.

The forecast

Despite the chance of rain, sunshine is expected to return for the weekend.

The National Weather Service indicated it was 76 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, with overcast skies reported.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 3 p.m. today, followed by showers likely between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Some thunderstorms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Up to a quarter of an inch of total rainfall is possible, and today’s high will be near 89.

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is predicted for tonight, and some storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Up to a quarter of an inch of total rainfall is possible, and the low will be around 70.

Mostly sunny skies will round out the week Friday, with a high near 87. Partly cloudy skies will follow into Friday night, with a low around 65.

Partly sunny skies are predicted for Saturday, along with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The high will be near 85.

Partly cloudy skies are predicted for Saturday night, with a low around 64.

Mostly sunny skies will round out the weekend on Sunday, with a high near 87. Partly cloudy skies will carry over into Sunday night, with a low around 65.
