Library’s Friends meet Oct. 24
PITTSTON — The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 in the library conference room.
The library now has the following fall hours in place:
Monday and Thursday – Noon to 7 p.m.
Wednesday – Closed
Tuesday and Friday – 9 to 4 p.m.
Saturday – 9 to 4 p.m.
Children ages 18 months to 5 can bring their grownup to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24.
Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25. The program features age appropriate stories, songs, activities, and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children. The program is as follows:
• Books and Babies – for ages newborn to 18 months, 9:30 a.m.
• Terrific Twos – for ages 18 months to 3 years, 10:30 a.m.
• Preschool Pals – ages 3 to 5 years, 11:30 a.m.
Registration is required and sign-ups are available in the children’s wing or by calling the children’s department.
Local author John Stanley will discuss his book “Suscon Screams Louder,” a follow-up to “Suscon Screams” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. Books will be available for sale plus refreshments. Register at the front desk or call the library to reserve a spot.
Scary Story Hour for Adults will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 in the John P. Cosgrove Center.
The Second Annual Health Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. This event will feature 27 vendors with up to date information regarding health related topics, flu shots, blood pressure screening, and other activities that are important to wellness and overall health. For more information, call the library.
A painting night will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in which participants can celebrate Thanksgiving by painting a smaller-sized hand-lettered canvas painting. Space is limited and a $25 payment is required with reservations.
A Ukrainian Pysanky Class taught by Tammy Budnovitch will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7 and Tuesday, Nov. 8. Participants will make Christmas eggs for and will learn to make their own pysanky. The cost for the class is $25 per person which includes supplies needed. Space is limited and reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
Teen Reading Lounge (TRL) will hold registration throughout the month of October and the first meeting will be Saturday, Nov. 12. TRL is an interactive book club for teens in grades 6 through 12 and each month they will focus on a new book and engage in fun activities based it.
Teen Advisory Group, or TAG, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10.
Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome.
The library’s new tween book club called “Page Turners is for readers in fourth and fifth grade called. Meetings are held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays beginning and include a craft and discussion of Roald Dahl’s “The Witches.”
Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.
Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.
Adult computer classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. The class goes over email, mouse skills and web surfing. Registration is required by calling the library.
The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.
The Wee Build program is held Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. for children ages 1 through 11. The new toys used promote development in many skills and allow children to express themselves through play. Stop by the library and start building.
Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.
Children ages 3 to 11 are invited to the Lego Club from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Pittston Memorial Library.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.
WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY
Watch scary movies
WEST PITTSTON — Get into the spooky spirit and be entertained by a selection of frightening flicks on the following dates at the West Pittston Library:
• Tuesday, Oct. 25 – “Ouija”
• Thursday, Oct. 27 – “The Grudge”
Show time is 5:45 p.m. for each movie. Light snacks will be provided, but participants must bring their own beverages. Movies are all rated PG-13.
A Halloween Celebration will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. There will be scary books around the “campfire” and a kid-friendly story of terror film. There will also be making a creepy-crawly craft. Participants can bring their already carved jack-o-lantern to compete for best in show.
Hands-On STEM will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. Participants can explore a variety of interactive activities at their own pace. Science: magnets, static, tornadoes; Technology: play with tiny robots and educational apps on iPads; Engineering: build with straws or wooden planks, construct a marble run; Math: estimation jars, tanagrams and sorting.
The Library Laboratory is back at the West Pittston Library. Events begin at 6 p.m. Tuesdays to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment.
The following is a list of upcoming sessions:
• Nov. 8, Motion — Help welcome guest instructor Mrs. Campenni from Montgomery Avenue Elementary. She’ll have participants building, racing, dropping, sliding, pushing, bouncing and more as they conduct experiments to support Newton’s Laws of Motion.
Minecraft In Real Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. There will be creeper toss and nerf gun targets, videos, 3D mushroom craft, pixel art, a hunt for elements and bingo.
Join Christie (Yarosavich) Bonnice of Christie Bonnice State Farm for a seminar on Social Security Benefits at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. She will explain several key topics, cover some of the most frequently asked questions and review different strategies that are available.
Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday until Nov. 29. Members will get to express their interests, ideas for programs and recommendations for library purchases. Snacks will be provided.
Thumbprint self portraits will be done at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. After talking about the different types of fingerprint patterns, participants will create an art project with an enlargement of their own thumbprint that is unique to them.
Alice Judge Costello Birthday Party will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. There will be treats, hot beverages, and a special display of holiday books and decorations in honor of Alice Judge Costello’s birthday.
Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.
WYOMING FREE LIBRARY
Preschool story time begins Oct. 31
WYOMING — Preschool story time for children between ages 3 and 5 will be held from 11 a.m. to noon every Monday from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28 at the Wyoming Free Library.
The Ravenous Readers Book Discussion group will meet from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5 to discuss “The BFG” by Roald Dahl. The book discussion is free and open to children in grades 2 through 6. Call the library to register.
The library will host return guest speaker Chris Halbohm, Cht, director of the Kingston-Keystone Hypnosis Institute and Weight Loss Center, to speak from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Call the library to register.
The next Tea, Tips and Treasures program will be “Fun with Food” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. Children ages 3 and up will enjoy food themed activities, tea and snacks. This program is free, but space is limited. Call the library to register.
The library’s third annual children’s fashion show will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at the former St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on 97 E. 6th St. The show is open to the public and light refreshments will eb served. The site for the fashion show is not handicap accessible.
The Wyoming Free Library will hold a discussion group during the second season of “Podlark” which will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday through Nov. 28.
The last Tea, Tips and Treasures program for the year will be a Christmas party with a snowman theme held at noon Saturday, Dec. 17. Children ages 3 and up will enjoy Christmas fun and holiday snacks. This program is free, but space is limited. Call the library to register.
Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.
The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.

LAFLIN PUBLIC LIBRARY
Coloring for teens is Oct. 25
LAFLIN — Coloring for teens will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Laflin Public Library. The Halloween theme will be “Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls.” Materials will be provided or participants may bring their own.
Adult coloring will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 with a fall theme. Materials will be provided or participants may bring their own.
