Several local police departments joined state troopers Friday and Saturday for a DUI enforcement initiative they called Operation Nighthawk.

Through roving patrols both evenings across Luzerne County and surrounding areas, a total of 50 DUI arrests were made, along with 18 drug busts, and one underage drinking arrest. Officers also issued 193 traffic citations.

The operation included an educational component conducted at Penn State-Hazleton.

The family of Trooper Kenton Iwaniec spoke at the Hazleton campus. Iwaniec was killed March 27, 2008, by an impaired driver after his shift at Troop J, Avondale, in Chester County.

The effort was coordinated and assisted by Wilkes-Barre city police and Commonwealth Health. Other local police departments that participated: Forty Fort, Kingston Township, Nanticoke, Newport Township, Wilkes-Barre and White Haven.
