Pittston Area’s chances of taking the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 championship were slowly diminished Friday night against Hazleton Area.

The Cougars, thanks to some hot shooting throughout the game, pulled away from the Patriots, 52-39 to claim at least a share of the WVC Division 1 championship. The Patriots fall to 9-3 on the season with a pair of games to play. The Cougars now lead the Patriots by two games with just two games to play.

In District 2, Pittston Area looks to have a third seed locked up if it should win out the rest of the way. Pittston Area finishes the season by hosting Dallas on Monday and Coughlin on Wednesday. Pittston Area would need two wins and two Hazleton Area losses to force a playoff for the Division 1 title.

Against Hazleton, the Patriots, who were playing with guard Taryn Ashby, trailed early. After storming back, Pittston Area would take a two-point halftime lead. From there, however, it was all Hazleton Area’s defense. The Cougars limited Pittston Area to just 14 points in the second half.
