WEST PITTSTON — A dominant rushing attack paved the way to a 32-7 Wyoming Area win over the defending District 2 Class 3A champions Crestwood on Friday night.

The Warriors ran for 222 yards on 48 carries and had three touchdown runs, as they dictated the pace of play and were the more physical team throughout the night.

Wyoming Area was led by their junior tailback, Brian Miles, who had a game-high 38 carries for 168 yards and two touchdown. Miles’ first score of the night came with 2:45 left in the third quarter, when after ramming the ball play-after-play on the scoring drive, he barreled into the end zone for a 1-yard scamper for a 16-7 lead.

Trailing 10-0 to start the second half, Crestwood cut into the deficit. A costly pass interference penalty by the Warriors allowed Crestwood’s Josh Malkemes to take the reverse hand-off 29 yards for a touchdown, cutting Wyoming Area’s lead to 10-7 with 7:50 left in the third quarter.

That would be as close at the Comets would get the rest of the night.

Miles’ second score came at 5:50 left in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard bruising touchdown run to give Wyoming Area a 25-7 lead.

Crestwood’s offense struggled to find its rhythm all night long and totaled just 176 yards of offense in the contest. T

Crestwood quarterback Lance Blass was 3 for 15 for 34 yards. Wyoming Area senior Ryan Murray picked off Blass late in the third quarter to stall a Crestwood drive.

With a win under their belts, the Warriors will gear up to host Berwick, 17-14 losers to Selinsgrove next Friday night. Crestwood Comets (1-4) will squared off against the Hazleton Cougars, 47-0 winners over Pittston Area, at home next week.
