EXETER — Just one week into the Wyoming Valley Conference golf schedule, a rivalry was already the centerpiece at Fox Hill Country Club.
Wyoming Area and Pittston Area met on the club’s track with the Warriors pulling out a 171-201 win. Anthony Shaver brought home medalist honors for Wyoming Area after shooting a 40. Madeline Wharton finished with a 42, Ryan Wrubel had a 43 and Nik Athmann chipped in with a 46.
Pittston Area’s Allie Craig led the Patriots with a low score of 45. Bobby Neishman carded a 48 in the loss.
Tryba Preseason Invitational
Wyoming Area’s Anthony Shaver carded the lowest score of Greater Pittston players in the Tryba Preseason Invitational held on Monday, Aug. 24 at Fox Hill Country Club.
Shaver finished with a 39-41-80, good for a sixth place finish in the individual event. Ryan Wrubel and Nik Athmann shot an 86. Madeline Wharton carded a 90.
Pittston Area’s Allie Craig led the Patriots with an 89.
Wyoming Valley West’s Tyler Yankosky won the individual title with a 75. Crestwood won the team portion of the event. Wyoming Area finished fourth.
In the history of the Tryba Preseason Invitational, only two Greater Pittston players have won top honors. Former Pittston Area player Brandon Matthews is a four-time winner, while Wyoming Area’s Rob Glyncefer won the tournament in 2005. No Greater Pittston team has ever won team honors.

Wyoming Area’s Ryan Wrubel led the Warriors in a loss to Coughlin on Thursday, Aug. 27 at Wilkes-Barre Golf Club.
Wrubel shot a 41, while Madeline Wharton carded a 43. Anthony Shaver and Carter Kusakavitch rounded out the scoring with a 47.
