Wyoming Area stunned perennial power Berwick, 21-7, in front of a packed house at Berwick’s Crispin Field.
Justin Piontkowski scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, Pat Mackin had a 25-yard touchdown and Tyler Saville plunged in from one yard for the Warrior scores. Wyoming Area held Berwick star Brant Quick to 106 yards.
September 1995
Pittston Area’s football team was upset by Hazleton Area, 14-7, to hand the Patriots their fourth straight loss to open the 1995 season.
With the score tied at 7 and just 12 seconds to play, Hazleton’s Ryan Saxon rattled off a 75-yard touchdown run to seal the win for the Cougars. Saxon finished with 33 carries for 247 yards.
Rob Aukenbrand scored Pittston Area’s only touchdown, a 39-yard run in the first quarter.
September 1985
Despite coming back from a 19-6 deficit against Pottsville, Wyoming Area suffered its first setback of the season, 26-20.
The first Warrior score came when Mike Birosak scored from short yardage and Phil Russo connected with Joe Bednarski for the two-point conversion.
Wyoming Area’s Ken Kopetchny caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from Phil Russo with 1:02 left in the third to bring the score to 26-14. Later, Russo tossed a short pass to Scott Schalles for a score.
September 1975
Pittston area used a 35-yard field goal from Frank Czerniakowski and a special teams touchdown to knock off Coughlin, 24-15.
In the first quarter, junior Chick Andrewscavge blocked a Coughlin punt attempt and sophomore Danny McGuire picked it up and ran for a touchdown. The Patriots marched 79 yards for a touchdown late in the game to seal the win. An 11-yard touchdown run by Carmen LoPresto capped the win.
