Local Sports Roundup: Johnson sets pace for Pittston Area

Pittston Area’s Tara Johnson (19:21) finished second overall behind Tunkhannock’s Maggie Toczko as the Patriots earned two wins in a cross country meet at Lake-Lehman on Wednesday.

Johnson was followed by Bailey Loyack and Arianna Boccardi, who came in sixth and seventh place, respectively. The Patriots were winners over Valley West and Tunkhannock. Pittston Area lost to Lake-Lehman.

On the boys side, Pittston Area fell victim to Lake-Lehman 17-41, Tunkhannock 18-43 and Valley West 22-33. No Pittston Area runners finished in the top-10 on Wednesday.

WA boys earn win against MMI Prep

At Crestwood, Wyoming Area took a win over MMI Prep, 18-41, on Wednesday. The Warriors would fall to Crestwood by one point, 28-29, and Hazleton Area, 15-50.

On the girls side, Wyoming Area fell to Crestwood and Hazleton Area.


Wyoming Area 3, Meyers 0

Rachel Solano had 14 assists, three aces and two kills while Jess Sorick provided 13 kills, four blocks and four aces as Wyoming Area topped Meyers 25-10, 25-9 and 25-22 on Thursday.

Nicole Wright also added 12 service points, five kills and four aces for the Warriors.

Pittston Area 3, Dallas 1

Pittston Area defeated the Mountaineers via game scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-11 on Tuesday.

Anna McDermott had 19 service points, eight aces and eight kills while Kristen Durling provided 25 assists, nine aces and six kills.

Marley O’Brien added 12 kills and Adriana Alvarado tallied 10 service points and five aces to further help Pittston Area to the win.

Wyoming Area 3, Berwick 1

Wyoming Area defeated Berwick 23-25, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-10.

The Warriors were lead by Jess Sorick (13 kills, 6 service points), Heather Nametko (18 digs, 7 kills), Megan Wysocki (6 kills, 5 aces) and Rachel Solano (28 assists, 5 kills).
