Swimming: Tough week for both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area swimmers

Both Pittston Area’s and Wyoming Area’s girls and boys swimming teams suffered losses in the past week. The Warriors took on Wyoming Valley West on Wednesday, while the Patriots battled with Hazleton Area on Tuesday.


Hazleton Area 97, Pittston Area 88

After a strong effort, Pittston Area’s girls swim team fell to Hazleton Area, 97-88 on Tuesday.

Pittston Area’s Abby Norwillo took first place in the diving portion of the meet. Norwillo scored 191.35 as the Patriots took the top two spots.

The only other two wins for the girls came in relay events. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Arianna Boccardi, Adison Hazlet, Tara Johnson and Erin Senese swam a time of 1:59.54. In the 400 freestyle relay event, the team of Katrina Dillon, MacKenzie Connors, Kassity Roche and Boccardi was a time of 4:37.46.

The Patriots used a handful of second place finishes and several third place finishes to keep the meet close.

Valley West 130, Wyoming Area 49

Wyoming Area’s Madelyn Rescinti earn the lone win for the Warriors in a loss to Wyoming Valley West on Wednesday.

Rescinti scored 98.20 points, which was ahead of Valley West’s Aria DeSilva. Olivia Bugelholl finished third in the 100 fly, while. Valley West swept every other individual event. The Warriors finished second in the 200 medley relay and third in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.


Hazleton Area 124, Pittston Area 29

In an exhibition match, Pittston Area’s Nick Petrucci won the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.38 as the Patriots fell to Hazleton Area on Tuesday.

Petrucci was also the winner of the 100 freestyle event with a time of 55.03. Eric Fritz added a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:12.74.

Valley West 126, Wyoming Area 46

Wyoming Area’s Ryan Murphy picked up a pair of second-place finishes as the Warriors fell to Wyoming Valley West on Wednesday.

Murphy’s 2:07 in the 200 freestyle was good enough for second place behind Valley West’s Maxim Kowalski. Austin Alder picked up a second place finish in the 50 freesyle. Michael Murphy picked up a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
