Wyoming Area’s senior boys basketball players picked up their first win against Old Forge, 53-49, in the championship game of the Wyoming Area Holiday Tournament.
Lou Falzone had a team-high 18 points – 14 in the first half – while teammate Tyrell George spent 12 minutes of the first half on the bench because of foul trouble. Falzone finished with 14 rebounds.
Old Forge’s Jared Yanniello scored a game-high 19 points. Jim DeStefano had 18 points and four rebounds.
January 1996
Pittston Area almost turned in a miraculous comeback in a 61-57 loss at the hands of Bishop Hoban in boys basketball action.
Down nine points with 1:30 remaining, Pittston Area’s Jason Tibbett hit a trio of three-point baskets in a 45-second span to pull the Patriots within one. However, on Pittston Area’s final possession, Tibbett wasn’t able to get a clean look.
Tibbett finished with 14 points, while Tom Biscotti had 13 points. Andre LaBrutte scored nine points in the loss.
January 1986
Seton Catholic’s girls basketball team took down GAR, 56-30, to push its league record to 6-1 to start the season.
The Lady Eagles led, 19-8, after the opening period and were never challenged. Nicole Kovaleski led the way with 26 points while Pat Redington scored 12 points. Kate Tigue had six points. Meghan Tigue and Mary Connell had four points each.
Tigue pulled down 11 rebounds to keep Seton’s fast break offense running.
January 1976
The Pittston Area Marin Corps Physical Fitness Team, coached by Jon McHale, placed second in a competition in Wilkes-Barre and advanced to the state competition.
Joe Hensley took first place in the pull-up competition with 24. Sam Granteed was first in the standing long jump with 9 feet, 2 inches.
