Pittston Area had a tough week on the wrestling mats.

The Patriots suffered a close loss in dual meet competition and then were unable to get a wrestler through the first half of the Wyoming Valley Conference tournament.

Coughlin 37, Pittston Area 36

Coughlin needed a tiebreaker to hand Pittston Area its first dual meet loss overall in a Wyoming Valley Conference match that reduced the number of teams unbeaten in Division 1 competition from four to three.

The teams were tied, 36-36, Tuesday before the visiting Crusaders won the tiebreaker criteria and were awarded an additional point.

The Coughlin-Pittston Area match was the only dual meet of the week for either local school.

WVC Tournament

Wyoming Area got four wrestlers through to the semifinals during the first of two days of the Wyoming Valley Conference Tournament Friday at Lake-Lehman.

The tournament was scheduled to conclude Saturday with action beginning in the morning with semifinals.

The Warriors had wrestlers in back-to-back weight classes in two spots.

Pat Heck and Kendrick Beyer reached the semifinals at 132 and 138 pounds. Zachary Briggs and Adam Buczynski advanced at 170 and 182.

In addition to the four Warriors who were attempting to win individual championships, Wyoming Area and Pittston Area also had wrestlers in Saturday’s consolation rounds, trying to finish as high as third in their weight classes.
