SCRANTON — Madi Osticco, a junior at Pittston Area, won a gold medal in the diving competition at the Les Richards Invitational on Friday, Feb. 12 at Scranton High School.
Osticco turned in a 369.15-point performance. That was good for six points ahead of Abington Heights’ Sydney Dana. West Scranton’s Michael Bruno won the boys championship with a score of 434.85. Pittston Area coach Amy Hazlet said this is Osticco’s first full year of diving.
“She’s done fantastic,” Hazlet said. “She puts in the work every day. She’s very relaxed and doesn’t get stressed out – keeps things light.”
Hazlet said Osticco has won all but one diving event this year.
The Pittston Area junior scored 167 in the preliminary dives and was in first place. In the semifinals, she found herself in second place to Dana with 264.5. Her dive in the finals sent her to the top. She’ll be competing in the district championships at the end of the month.
In the boys event at the Les Richards Invitational, Pittston Area’s Nick Petrucci picked up a fourth place with a time of 23.46 in the 50 freestyle. Eric Fritz swam a 1:03.81 in the 100 butterfly. Both will be competing for a medal at the district championships.
Up next of Osticco and Pittston Area will be the PIAA District 2 Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, March 5. The diving event will be on Feb. 27 at the Wilkes-Barre CYC, 36 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Hazlet said she expects Osticco to have a nice showing at the district championships.
“I think she will do very well,” Hazlet said. “I see her being a contender for a district medal. I think she’ll keep that relaxed attitude she has. She’ll go and do her best and hopefully she can earn her medal.”
Osticco, who has an extensive background in gymnastics, was on the team last season but didn’t find the success she is this season. Last year, she was behind the top two divers in District 2: district champion Sierra Williams and district runner-up Abby Norwillo. Williams was lost to graduation, while Norwillo suffered an injury earlier in the season. Now, it’s all up to Osticco.
The Patriots will be sending approximately 20 swimmers to the championships.
“With Abby being injured, (Osticco) has really taken over,” Hazlet said. “I think (diving coach) Alyssa Scatena does an excellent job with our divers.”
