Upon Further Review: Pittston Area swimmers won 17 medals at 2006 district championships

March 2006

Seventeen Pittston Area swimmers won district medals and the team set two school relay records during the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Class A Diving and Swimming Championships.

The team of Erin Donahue, Chloe Sanchez, Michelle D’Amico and Arianna Pourmonir broke the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:02.21 and finished fourth. Carisa Andes, Alicia Bryk, Lauren Shovlin and Pourmonir broke the 200 free relay record in 1:45.89 and finished fifth.

Alicia Bryk won first place in the diving event.

Four Pittston Area boys also won medals for their time in the 200 free relay: Matt Radle, Keith Griffin, Mark Perrins and Eric Wendolowski.

March 1996

The first annual Susanne T. Dente Memorial Basketball Tournament was held in Susanne Dente’s memory following her passing in 1995.

The three-day event was held at Seton Catholic and featured 12 girls basketball teams. Gate of Heaven won the tournament, while St. Mary’s Assumption finished second. St. Mary’s Avoca finished third and Holy Rosary Duryea finished fourth.

March 1986

The West Wyoming Recreation Board awarded its annual fishing contest trophies. The winners were: Mark Karcutskie, Frankie Fosko, Paul Mazzateli, Dom Answini, Donny Harbough and John Hizny Jr.

March 1976

Greater Pittston resident John Licata, a former All-Scholastic football player at Pittston Area and wrestler at Wyoming Seminary, finished third at the National Prep School Wrestling Tournament.

Licata also won three trophies at the Girard Tournament in Philadelphia. He finished the season with a 17-2 record and recorded 10 pins on the year. In his career, Licata was 70-12, including 36 pins.
