Josh Kopcza from Wyoming Area and Chris Merithew from Pittston Area each provided pitching and hitting Friday to lead their teams to Wyoming Valley Conference victories.

For the second straight week, the schedule was shortened because of weather issues. Only one other game was played before the Warriors and Patriots each won Friday.

Wyoming Area 3, Berwick 0

Josh Kopcza threw a three-hit shutout and contributed to the offense with two hits and a run scored when Wyoming Area turned back visiting Berwick, 3-0, in a WVC Division 2 game.

The Warriors improved to 2-0 and have allowed only one run in their first two games. They are a half-game behind Dallas, which is off to a 3-0 start. The first meeting between the two contenders has been postponed twice and is now scheduled for Monday at Dallas.

Kopcza walked one and struck out 10.

Mike Bonita, who drove in a run, and Cory Lescavage joined him with two hits each. Anthony Nardell had a hit, a run and an RBI.

The teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth.

Pittston Area 5, Coughlin 4

Chris Merithew made it through seven innings to get the pitching win in Pittston Area’s first victory of the season when the Patriots beat Coughlin, 5-4, in a WVC Division 1 game Friday.

Merithew struck out six and walked three. At the plate, he had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Jeff Donnora, C.J. Pisack each had two hits and a run scored while Joe DeLucca had two hits and an RBI. One of Pisack’s hits was a double.

Wyoming Valley West 6, Pittston Area 1

Tyler Yankosky threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts Thursday when defending champion Wyoming Valley West spoiled host Pittston Area’s WVC Division 1 opener with a 6-1 victory.

C.J. Pisack went 2-for-2 with a walk and drove in the only run for the Patriots. Kyle Ofier drew two walks and scored the team’s only run.

Tyler Jackson went the distance for Pittston Area without walking a batter.
