DALLAS — Nathan Searfoss and Sherri Yelen ran to victories in the 8th annual Pauly Friedman Family 5K Run on Sunday at Misericordia University.

Searfoss, a 15-year-old from Wilkes-Barre, broke the tape in 19 minutes and 47 seconds. He outran second-place finisher, Don Nelson, 49, of Shickshinny, by 1:05.

“I started out fast,” said Searfoss, who will be a sophomore this fall at Coughlin High School where he runs track and cross country. “Once I got into a nice pace, I kept that pace until I reached the turnaround. After that, it was downhill. So I pushed the downhill and the kept pushing to the finish.”

Searfoss wasn’t challenged throughout the entire race, leading all the way. He finished second last year behind Stephen Housenick.

Yelen won top female honors, finishing third overall in 20:56. It was Yelen’s fourth win in five attempts at Pauly Friedman. Her only loss came at the hands of Marina Orrson, the area’s top female runner over the last four years.

“I usually pace myself early in these races,” said Yelen, a 44-year-old chemistry teacher at Meyers High School who lives in Kingston. “But this year I pushed myself right from the start.”

The new strategy worked well for Yelen.

She ran behind a pack of four runners who were trying to catch the leader. Then, near the halfway point, she began picking them off one by one.

“I was able to pull ahead of three of them,” Yelen said. “The one guy (Nelson) I didn’t catch ended up beating me by four seconds.”

Yelen is currently doing triathlon training at STRIVE, a triathlon training center at Harveys Lake.

Proceeds from the Pauly Friedman 5K go to Help Line, a program of Family Services Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Help Line is an information and referral service for crisis calls in Bradford, Clinton, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne and Wyoming counties. It operates around the clock every day of the year.

Before the start of the race, Mike Zimmerman, Family Services CEO and Misericordia University president, Tom Botzman thanked the sponsors and participants of the race for their support.

Zimmerman said this year’s race was expected to raise about $12,000. When the final numbers are in and if they meet expectations, the race will have raised around $75,000 over its eight-year history. Zimmerman also thanked Misericordia University for providing the venue for the event.
