H.S. Cross Country: Pittston Area girls stay unbeaten in WVC

WILKES-BARRE — Pittston Area senior Arianna Boccardi and freshman Nicole Zambetti took the top two spots in Pittston Area’s sweep over Berwick, Nanticoke, Northwest and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech in cross country action on Wednesday.

The Lady Patriots picked up perfect wins over Northwest, Nanticoke and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech. Pittston Area beat Berwick 18-43.

Boccardi finished the course at Kirby Park with a time of 20:28 to lead all girl runners. Freshman Nicole Zambetti was second for the Patriots at 21:04. Junior Bailey Loyack was fourth overall, while Genny English and Mary Silinskie were sixth and seventh, respectively.

For the boys, Pittston Area’s Joey Fisher was the top Patriot finsiher as the locals picked up wins over Nanticoke, Northwest and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech. The Patriots fell to Berwick, 17-49.

Fisher’s time of 18:42 was good for sixth overall. Teammate Tony DeMark was just behind Fisher in seventh place. Nate Ridgley and Jason DeBoard crossed the finish line in the top 20 to help the Patriots get three wins.

The wins keep Pittston Area unbeaten on the season, while Dallas is also 12-0.

Lady Warriors rock Mohawks

Wyoming Area’s Addison Orzel and Gwen Glatz led the way for the Warriors in a big win over Meyers on Wednesday in Wyoming.

Orzel’s 12th place finish in a time of 21:37 was just 15 seconds out of the top 10. Glatz crossed the line in 22:49 for the winners. Wyoming Area also nearly slipped past Holy Redeemer with a 22-33 loss. The Warriors fell to Hanover Area 25-30.

WA boys top Meyers

The Wyoming Area boys cross country team picked up a win over Meyers on Wednesday. Scores were not immediately available.

Zambetti top finisher at Foundation Meet

Pittston Area’s Nicole Zambetti finished 68th in the Gold race (Class 3A) at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Foundation meet held on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Hershey on the state championship course. More than 300 high school runners competed in the race.

As a team, Pittston Area finished 33rd out of the 45 teams competing. The Patriots were one spot in front of the only other Wyoming Valley Conference team in the division, Hazelton Area.

Zambetti’s time of 20:52 was just 15 seconds outside the top 50. The freshman ran a pace of 6:44. Senior Arianna Boccardi was Pittston Area’s second finisher with a time of 21:33.
