HUGHESTOWN — One of Wyoming Area’s best girls tennis seasons in school history came to an end Friday against Holy Redeemer.

The Royals defeated Wyoming Area, 3-0, to advance to the semifinals of the District 2 Class 2A Girls Team Tennis Championships. The match was halted after Holy Redeemer’s three straight wins to accommodate the Mid-American Conference Tournament also held at Kirby Park.

Charlotte Maria (No. 2 singles), Emily Evans and Lauren LaMarca (No. 1 doubles) and Julia Randazzo and Sonal Garg (No. 2 doubles) each recorded wins for Redeemer to end the match.

However, Wyoming Area was able to pick up a playoff win for the first time in recent memory.

On Wednesday, Wyoming Area advanced in the team tournament with a 3-2 victory over Western Wayne.

Brianna Pizzano won in straight sets for Wyoming Area at No. 1 singles. The two other victories were much closer.

At No. 2 singles, Allison Lampman needed to win a tiebreaker in the second set to defeat Western Wayne’s Sam Pritzlaff 6-1, 7-6. Wyoming Area’s No. 1 doubles team of Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minnelli dropped the first set 5-7, won the second via tiebreaker 7-6 and won the third 7-5.

Comets eliminate Patriots

Pittston Area, playing in a first round match in the District 2 Class 3A championships on Friday, fell to Abington Heights, 5-0. The team finished the regular season with eight wins before falling to Abington Heights.

Hazleton Area 5,

Wyoming Area 0

Lily Nowak and Sofia Losen won in straight sets in single competition as Hazleton Area shut out Wyoming Area on Monday.

The Cougars won the doubles matches in straight sets as well as they improved to 13-1 in WVC Division 3A. Wyoming Area fell to 9-4 in Division 2A.

MMI Prep 3,

Pittston Area 2

Madison Stanton and Brenna Yashkus won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles for Pittston Area. MMI forfeited the other doubles match for Pittston Area’s two wins.

What’s next

Although both teams fell Friday, things aren’t quite finished for Pittston Area or Wyoming Area. Players from both teams will participate in the individual championships scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13 at Kirby Park. The doubles portion of the championships will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 18, also at Kirby Park.
