Robin Wrobelski had a first-period pin at 126 pounds to tie the match early, but Wyoming Area fell, 54-18, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 match at Berwick Wednesday.

Corey Mruk pulled out an overtime victory at 160 and Justin Joseph followed with another decision at 170 before Adam Buczynski picked up a forfeit. Those three straight wins cut a 27-6 deficit to 27-18 before the Bulldogs won the last five bouts with the help of three of the five Warriors forfeits.

Wyoming Area jumped to a nine-point lead after two bouts, but lost to division leader Lake-Lehman in Tuesday’s WVC Division 2 match.

Justin Joseph opened the match with a pin at 170 pounds.

Jaryn Polit-Moran followed with a decision at 182 and Corey Mruk added an assist in the final bout at 160.

Berwick 50

Pittston Area 12

Pittston Area’s Ryan Lombardo won by pin in 25 seconds at 126 pounds Monday night during the non-league loss to visiting Berwick.

John Martinez and Josh McGilvary won by consecutive decisions at 152 and 160. Martinez won his bout in overtime. McGilvary’s decision cut the Berwick lead to 23-12 before the Bulldogs won the final five bouts.

The Patriots, who are 0-2 in WVC Division 1, fell to 0-11 overall.

Jersey Shore Duals

Wyoming Area went just 1-4 in the Jan. 14 dual meet tournament, but had a series of quick pins.

Robin Wrobleski’s 24-second pin in the final bout at 126 pounds clinched a 48-36 win over Pocono Mountain West in the team’s third match of the day.

Wyoming Area started with losses of 58-6 to Greensburg-Salem and 36-30 to Mount Carmel and finished up with losses of 62-18 to Muncy and 64-15 to Warrior Run.

Justin Joseph had an 11-second pin at 170 pounds in the win over Pocono Mountain West.

Tyler Martin also won a bout in 11 seconds. His was at 132 for the only points in the opening loss to Greensburg-Salem.

Adam Buczynski had a 20-second pin during the loss to Mount Carmel. The Warriors built a 30-18 lead, but did not have a wrestler available at the lowest three weight classes and had to forfeit the final three bouts of the loss.

Cory Mruk finished 4-1 on the day with three pins.

Buczynski, Wrobleski, Martin, and Charles Banashefski all went 3-2. Buczynski had all three of his wins by pins, including two in the first period. Wrobleski and Martin also had a pair of first-period pins.

Line Mountain Duals

Brandon Lopez pinned all five of his opponents at 106 pounds, but Pittston Area lost all five of its matches Jan. 14 at the Line Mountain Duals.

Lopez had a 50-second pin to start the day in a 60-18 loss to Lewisburg.

The other losses were to North Penn-Liberty, 36-22; Shikellamy, 50-12; Milton, 60-18; and West Chester Rustin, 66-18.

Pittston Area lost a total of 29 bouts by forfeit on the day, including eight against West Chester Rustin.

Ryan Lombardo went 3-1 with a pin and a major decision at 120. Josh McGilvary was 2-1 at 160.

The week ahead

Pittston Area is at Wyoming Valley West, the only other winless team in WVC Division 1 matches, Wednesday.

The Patriots, who were scheduled to host Tunkhannock Saturday, are home with Mountain View at 1 pm. Saturday, Jan. 28.

Wyoming Area, which was scheduled to wrestle at Nanticoke Saturday, is at Hanover Area Wednesday and West Scranton Thursday before a home match against Meyers Saturday, Jan. 28.
