The final meet of the Wyoming Valley Conference girls swimming season came down to the final event before Pittston Area fell short.

Berwick finished first and second in the closing 400-yard freestyle relay Thursday to defeat the visiting Lady Patriots, 93-77.

Pittston Area finished 6-6 to place seventh out of 13 teams in the conference in the first season under coach Heather Clancy.

The Lady Patriots needed a 1-2 finish in the final event to win the meet or a 1-3 finish to force a tie.

They had produced a 1-2 finish for their only victory of the meet three events earlier in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Mackenzie Connors, Kaitlin Connors, Kiersten Grieco and Erin Senese formed that winning relay.

Erin Senese won four events to lead the Lady Patriots to the win in their home season finale Wednesday.

Senese won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly and was also part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Katrina Dillon won the 200 and 500 freestyles.

Kaitlin Connors won the 100 freestyle and was part of the 400 freestyle relay win.

Kiersten Grieco was on both winning relay teams.

Jordan Zbegner won the 100 breaststroke and Madi Osticco came within two points of a school record while winning diving.

Juliet Lawler, Olivia Norwillo and Mackenzie Connors each swam winning relay legs.

Pittston Area was scheduled to compete Saturday in the Les Richards Invitational at Scranton High School.

Holy Redeemer girls 131, Wyoming Area 47

Emily Blaum won four events (10-2) to lead Holy Redeemer past visiting Wyoming Area in the WVC finale for both teams Tuesday.

Emily Easton, from Exeter Twp., won the 100-yard butterfly and was part of two winning relays for the Royals.

Wyoming Area finished 1-11 for 12th in the 13-team conference.

Nick Dubinski won four events to lead the host Royals in Tuesday’s WVC meet.

Wyoming Area went 0-9 to finish last out of 10 teams in the conference.
