WILKES-BARRE — The Wyoming Area boys swim team members came back from the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center with some heavier duffle bags.
Following the first day of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 Class AA Swimming Championships on Friday, Wyoming Area was in fifth place in the boys standings. The Warriors trailed Scranton Prep, Dallas, Tunkhannock and Holy Redeemer. A total of 16 teams competed.
A handful of Wyoming Area boys came home with medals after the first day of swimming. The top six places in each event receive a medal. The 200 medley relay team of Zach Lagrue, Michael Murphy, Ryan Murphy and Austin Alder turned in a fifth-place finish.
Ryan Murphy added to his collection after swimming a sub-two minute 200 freestyle, good for a sixth-place finish. He then added a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly at 56.87. Michael Murphy’s 2:15.13 gave him a sixth place in the 200 individual medley.
In the District 2 Class AAA championships, the Pittston Area girls were in seventh place following the first day of competition with 43 points. The boys were in eighth with 19 points.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Nick Petrucci. Petrucci earned a bronze in the 50 free with a time of 22.80. In the 100 fly, Eric Fritz turned in a time of 1:00.73, good for seventh place.
For the Lady Patriots, Erin Senese finished sixth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:08.70. The 200 free relay team of Katrina Dillon, Kiersten Grieco, MacKenzie Connors and Arianna Boccardi swam a time of 1:53.69, good for seventh place.
The second day of the District 2 Swimming Championships continued on Saturday, March 5 at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.
