WILLIAMSPORT — It was a tough start for the Wyoming Area wrestling team at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A Northeast Regional.
Kendrick Beyer, Patrick Heck, Zachary Briggs and Adam Buczynski all dropped into the elimination bracket and would need two victories Saturday to advance into the state tournament next week.
Briggs had the toughest setback.
Facing off with Benton’s Jeremy Walsh, Briggs found himself down 2-1 after the second period and 5-1 in the third. He scored three late points, but was edged out 6-4.
Beyer, the No. 2 seed at 126, ran into Hughesville’s Trevor Sones, who used two early takedowns en route to a 9-2 victory.
Heck, seeded third at 133, couldn’t overcome the surge of Benton junior Mike Stuart as the Warrior was pinned in the third period.
Buczynski had the toughest road, and it showed — pinned by Lewisburg’s Andrew Shedleski in just 61 seconds. Shedleski is 35-4 on the year and is seeded third in the bracket.
Two Avoca residents are still alive in the tournament as well.
Scranton Prep’s Thor Balavage is in the championship semifinals after his first-period pin, while sophomore Ivan Balavage lost a heartbreaker, 5-4, in his 182-pound opener to Troy’s Zach Zimmerman.
