PITTSTON — The Susquehanna Brewing Company won a gold award in the 2016 World Beer Cup, a global beer competition regarded as the “Olympics of Beer.”
Judges at the competition evaluate beers from around the world and recognize the most outstanding brewers and their beers.
Gold, silver and bronze awards in the competition’s 96 beer-style categories were presented on Friday during the World Beer Cup award ceremony at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
According to a news release, Susquehanna Brewing Company was awarded a gold award in the fruit beer style category for its Shady Spot Shandy, a lemonade-infused ale. Shady Spot is the most handcrafted brew in Susquehanna’s lineup, and each batch of the lemon mixture that goes into the ale-based brew is carefully blended by hand.
World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of 253 beer judges from 31 countries, and the competition saw an impressive field of 6,596 entries from 1,907 breweries in 55 countries.
“It’s always an honor being recognized for everyone’s hard work, ” said Fred Maier, vice president at Susquehanna Brewing Company. “Shady Spot is brewed to be enjoyed in a fun summer session with friends, and it is. Shady Spot quickly became a customer favorite when we released it just in time for the summer in 2014.”
The World Beer Cup gold award, while the most esteemed, is not Susquehanna Brewing Co.’s first high-caliber award it has won since opening in 2012. According to a news release, the company’s Southern Rye IPA took home a bronze for the 2016 Best of Craft Beer Awards in the Specialty IPA category. In October, the Goldencold Lager took home a bronze medal in the Munich-style Helles category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.
Earlier in 2015, the brewery won three medals in the Best of Craft Beer Awards competition — gold medals for Pils-Noir and So-Wheat Ale in their respective categories (Schwarzbier and German Hefeweizen), and bronze for the Goldencold Lager in the Helles category.
In 2014, Susquehanna was voted a winner in the Best Brewery Tour category in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. They also took home the “Best IPA” award from the Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest.
Based in Pittston, Susquehanna Brewing Company is a craft brewery that provides traditional and experimental brews to beer enthusiasts since opening in 2012.
