WYOMING — Pittston’s chapter of the Knights of Columbus celebrated its 125th anniversary recently, marking over a century of service and fellowship.
The celebration was held at the Wyoming Hose Company No. 2 on Oct 7, and included speeches, a blessing of the meal and a presentation of photographs of the chapter throughout its history.
Knight Fred Orkwis said that in an age when many service organizations are losing members, the chapter has about 500 active members.
Many of the members have been invited to join by other members. The men enjoy the chance to help the community, while enjoying each other’s company, he said.
Knight Frank Casarella, who has been a member of the organizations since 1991, said the faith based organization provided the chance for members to put feet to their faith and make a difference in the community.
Listed in their history of service are trips to nursing homes, scholarships for area students and helping homeless shelters and soup kitchens.
P.J. Melvin, a past grand knight, has been a member of the organization since the 1970s.
“You can’t beat the camaraderie,” he said. “You get to know these people. It’s friends joining friends in service.”
“The council continues our history of service and support in our community. Some of our current work to provide needed assistance includes the Food for Families drive, Coats for Kids program, fundraising for Special Olympics and an annual blood drive,” the event’s program concluded.
