EXETER — It’s back to school time and, rather jump into the school bus and classroom head on, the administration, faculty and staff of Wyoming Area Catholic (WAC) opened their arms and doors of the school by holding a good old-fashioned ice cream social in the school’s gym.
Each year, the ice cream social is an icebreaker for WAC students to get back into the school spirit before the pressures of studying and testing begins.
Students and parents were treated to all the ingredients to make delicious sundaes, including chocolate and caramel syrups, marshmallow syrup, peanuts, chocolate and vanilla whipped cream and, of course, cherries for the topping.
Justincredible Parties balloon artist Justin Davis was on hand making an array of balloon animals and objects for the children and the school provided games, activities and music for the social.
“Our PTG, along with faculty and cafeteria staff, plan this social to bring all the families and students together to welcome the new school year,” said Eileen Rishcoff, WAC principal. “The social was a great success and it is something that will continue for years to come.”
Rishcoff feels it is a way of re-connecting as the school year begins.
STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) exercises were conducted for parents and students during the ice cream social.
STEM will be heavily incorporated into daily activities at WAC for the 2019-2020 school year as it has become a priority because too few college students are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.
Maria Cassidy’s kindergarten-aged daughter Kayla attended WAC for pre-school and this was their second ice cream social.
“Kayla is excited about returning to school and this is nice to see everyone before the start of school,” Cassidy said. “It’s a chance to get reacquainted again and nice for Kayla to see her friends again and that gets her excited about coming back to school.”
WAC’s first day of school is tomorrow, Aug. 26.
