Saying everything “went quick and smooth,” Wyoming Area junior center midfielder Bianca Pizano decided to bring an early end to her field hockey recruiting process by committing to a scholarship to play in the Big Ten at Michigan State University.
Pizano made a verbal commitment to the school Monday.
Michigan State entered the mix in late August and followed Pizano closely, including having a coach at two Wyoming Area games in the fall.
In the aftermath of helping the Lady Warriors reach the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class A state semifinals for the second time in school history, Pizano decided her future plans.
“I decided I want to do it right now,” Pizano said. “I didn’t think I needed to wait for any others to come in.
“This was the place I wanted to go.”
Pizano made visits to the University at Albany, Virginia Commonwealth, Columbia, Holy Cross, Lehigh and Temple. She heard from other National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I schools and canceled a scheduled visit to Villanova once she made her decision.
After Michigan State made contact, Pizano went to the school for a visit, then to participate in a camp. The Spartans came through with a scholarship offer in November.
Pizano is likely to pursue a science-related major.
Michigan State finished the 2021 season with a 7-8 record. The Spartans reached the Final Four in 2001 and 2004.
