Wyoming Area has the highest-scoring offense in District 2 football and now the Warriors have the hottest defense.
Lidge Kellum ran for three first-half touchdowns and Jacob Morgan led the defense to its third straight shutout Friday night when the Warriors opened the postseason by pounding visiting Carbondale 49-0 in a District 2 Class 3A football quarterfinal at Anthony “Jake” Sobeski Stadium.
Kellum ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter and another on the first play of the second for a 21-0 lead.
“Lidge Kellum had another outstanding night running the ball,” Warriors coach Randy Spencer said in a telephone interview.
Morgan was in on three tackles for losses and also recovered a fumble.
“Our defense played really well,” Spencer said.
Wyoming Area led 35-0 at halftime, placing the entire second half under the running clock of the Mercy Rule.
Kellum moved Wyoming Area right up the field on the opening drive and scored on a 34-yard touchdown run off the right side less than two minutes into the game. He carried 13 times for 193 yards, all in the first half.
The lead reached 14-0 with 4:34 left in the first quarter. Kellum went off left tackle, broke into the secondary then stiff-armed the last two Chargers who had a chance at 8stopping him on what became a 56-yard touchdown run.
Wyoming Area opened the second quarter with fourth-and-two from the Carbondale 15. Kellum spun out of a tackle and made his way into the end zone for the third time.
Michael Crane went up the middle and stretched the ball across the goal line for a 5-yard touchdown with 6:44 left in the half. Trustin Johnson also scored from the 5, less than 2½ minutes later for the 35-0 halftime lead.
The two second-half touchdowns came on passes over the middle.
Anthony DeLucca found Kevin Wiedl for a 55-yard touchdown with 8:43 left in the third.
Brady Jones passed 26 yards to Drew Keating with 9:51 remaining.
John Turner had a sack and forced fumble while Johnson interception a pass.
