PLAINS TWP. – Pittston Area’s Daniela Ranieli was the game’s second-leading scorer and Duryea resident Brooke Kroptavich turned in a strong all-around performance in an otherwise difficult night for the White team during the girls opener to Friday’s Dr. George P. Moses Senior All-Star Classic.
Lake-Lehman’s Ella Wilson put on a show in a team Most Valuable Player performance as the Red pounded the White 104-50.
The Red team was coached by Wyoming Valley West’s Gary Ferenchik while the White was coached by Hanover Area’s Marie Skrepenak.
Wilson made all six of her shots in the third quarter and her first three in the fourth quarter while scoring 24 of her 33 points in the second half. She also grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out six assists and made two steals.
Ranieli, the all-state guard for the Lady Patriots, shared the assist lead of six while scoring 15 points, grabbing five rebounds and making a steal.
Kroptavich, who played for District 2 Class 3A finalist Holy Redeemer, immediately established herself as a force on the boards on a night when the White otherwise struggled. She had her team’s first four rebounds and, after a 6-0 Red start, scored the first White points and assisted on the second White basket.
In 19 minutes, Kroptavich grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. She led the team in assists with three and blocked shots with two, along with going 3-for-7 from the floor for six points, and was selected as the White MVP.
Maddie Karp and Grace Callahan joined Ranieli as Pittston Area’s representatives in the game.
The Pittston Area players combined to go 4-for-6 in a 36-point fourth quarter for the White.
Ranieli made a 3-pointer and twice assisted layups by Karp. Callahan also scored.
Karp finished 3-for-4 from the floor with a 3-pointer for seven points. She also had three rebounds and a steal.
Callahan was 2-for-3 with four points, three rebounds, two assists and a block.
Players from Wyoming Valley West, Lake-Lehman, MMI Prep, Wyoming Seminary and Tunkhannock joined the Pittston Area players on the winning team.
Krea Bonita and Kendall Day from Wyoming Area played on the White team that also had representatives from Holy Redeemer, Wilkes-Barre Area, Nanticoke, Crestwood and Hanover Area.
Bonita made two free throws, had two rebounds and passed out one assist.
Day tied for second on the team with seven rebounds. She also had two points, two assists and a steal.
